"Love the Lord and you will find joy in everything."

During Black History Month, we celebrate the lives and legacies of Black individuals whose courage, faith, and resilience continue to inspire. One remarkable figure is Saint Josephine Bakhita, whose story stands as a testament to strength, forgiveness, and hope.

Born in Sudan in 1869, Josephine Bakhita was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery. She endured years of suffering, yet her spirit remained unbroken. Eventually brought to Italy, she gained her freedom and discovered her faith, joining the Canossian Sisters. For over 40 years, she devoted her life to prayer, teaching, and caring for others, sharing her journey with humility and compassion.

Saint Josephine Bakhita’s life speaks powerfully to the Black experience: she represents resilience in the face of oppression and the transformative power of faith. Her story encourages reflection on justice, freedom, and human dignity—values that remain urgently relevant today.

Her legacy also challenges us to confront modern slavery and human trafficking, reminding us that the fight for equality and human rights continues. Celebrating her life during Black History Month highlights not only her remarkable journey but also the ongoing contributions of Black people to faith, society, and justice.

Saint Josephine Bakhita inspires us to live with courage, compassion, and unwavering faith. She is a symbol of hope and a reminder that, even in the darkest moments, resilience and love can shine through. This Black History Month, we honour her life and legacy, inviting reflection on how we can act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly in our own communities.
