“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.”

Maya Angelou is one of those voices that stays with you. She faced incredible challenges in her life—racism, discrimination, and personal struggles—but she transformed them into wisdom, hope, and encouragement for others. While she wasn’t formally a church leader, her words and example have a lot to teach us about living a faith-filled, compassionate life.

Angelou reminds us that faith isn’t just about what we believe—it’s about how we act. She encourages us to stand up for justice, lift others up, and bring hope where it’s needed most. Her advice to “try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud” is a simple but powerful reminder that small acts of kindness and love can make a real difference.

She also shows the power of storytelling. Like the heroes of scripture, sharing our stories—and listening to others’—can open hearts, teach lessons, and inspire change. Angelou’s life is a beautiful example of resilience, courage, and the ability to turn hardship into hope.

This Black History Month, reflecting on Maya Angelou can inspire all of us to live our faith more fully. How can we be kinder, braver, and more compassionate in our everyday lives? How can we bring hope and encouragement to those around us? Angelou’s life reminds us that even small acts of love and courage can shine light in dark places—and that’s something the church is called to do every day.
