As the nights draw in and December approaches, the world around us seems to hurry into Christmas. Lights go up, diaries fill, and the familiar rush begins. But within the life of the Church, Advent gently invites us to move at a different pace. Rather than racing toward the festivities, Advent calls us into a season of longing and waiting — a sacred pause that helps us prepare our hearts to receive Christ anew.
Advent is a time when we dare to recognise our deep need for God’s presence. The ancient prophets spoke of a people walking in darkness who longed for light; their yearning echoes in our own lives today. We, too, feel the weight of a world that is not yet as it should be. We, too, carry hopes, questions, and unfulfilled desires. Advent gives us permission to name that longing. It reminds us that God meets us not in our perfection, but in our waiting.
In this spirit of expectant preparation, we invite you to take up a simple daily practice to help you embrace the season more deeply. Each day of Advent, set aside just two minutes of stillness. Light a candle if you can, or simply pause and turn off your screen. Reflect on a gentle question: Where do I long for Christ’s light today? What hope am I waiting for? Where might I make room for God? These brief moments of quiet can open our hearts in surprising ways.
And if you would like to root your Advent journey in regular prayer with others, you are warmly invited to our midweek worship:
Morning Prayer at 9.00am, Monday to Wednesday,
and the Eucharist at 9.30am on Thursday.
These simple services offer a peaceful rhythm to help us watch, wait, and prepare for Christ’s coming.
As we enter this holy season, may our longing be honest, our waiting expectant, and our hope renewed.
